HAVING earned his honours degree in Political Economics and International Relations cum laude at UKZN, 2006 Alumnus of St Henry’s Marist College, Jethro Abel, found himself in Edinburgh in mid 2012 at the British International Studies Conference.
He was by far the youngest presenter of research work at the gathering. This led to an exciting opportunity to apply for a prestigious Commonwealth Shared Scholarship. The scheme is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and UK universities, to support students from developing Commonwealth countries.
Scholarships are offered for Master’s study only. Candidates of excellent academic calibre benefit from postgraduate study at a British university so they can contribute toward the development of their home countries.
Jethro was one of 40 young people chosen out of some 7500 applicants and earned his MSC in African and International Development. He is now home and has a vision to give back to his homeland by providing political education for young people and the broader community.
