Join forces to protest against heavies on Fields Hill

The community is urged to stand together to protest against the use of Field's Hill by trucks.

THE community is urged to stand together in protest against the recent devastating road accident which saw 22 people killed when a truck collided with four taxis and two cars on the M13 off ramp and Richmond Road intersection.

The prayer vigil and protest action against the heavy vehicles using Fields Hill is being organised by DA Ward Councillors Rick Crouch (Ward 10) and Tim Brauteseth (Ward 18).

Pending Metro Police approval, there will be a march from the Pinecrest Shopping Centre to the site of the accident on Saturday, 14 September. Protesters will meet at  at 8.30am in the free Pinecrest parking area opposite the Lahee Park Swimming pool and start the march to the accident scene at 9am.

Protest banners and black armbands will be issued to marchers. Feel free to make banners that pertain specifically to the banning of heavy duty vehicles from Fields Hill. Political banners will not be allowed as this is a community action.

A prayer vigil will be held from 9.30am at the scene of the accident. Those not wanting to join in the march can just meet for the prayer vigil. This is a community event and all interested parties are encouraged to attend.

If you wish to join the march, you can park at Pinecrest Shopping Centre, Lahee Park Swimming Pool or at the Lahee Park Rugby Club.

If you do not want to participate in the march, there is ample parking space in Kirk Road, off Josiah Gumede (Old Main) near the caravan and boat business.

A group of community activists have started a Fields Hill Accident Fund to provide assistance to the families of the victims and survivors. Should you wish to contribute, please bring non perishable foodstuffs to the protest for collection and distribution.

Rescuetech, will be putting up white crosses at the accident site to show support for this march.

“This is a non-political event and we are encouraging everyone to participate, including the taxi industry as they were greatly impacted by this tragic accident. We are meeting at the site of the accident at 9.30am, please bring your homemade signs with relevant slogans. The MEC was warned by us as far back as 2009 that trucks using Field Hill is a tragedy waiting to happen. He is responsible for these deaths as the buck stops with him”, said DA Councillor Rick Crouch.

“What we do in this country is practice tombstone legislation, we only act once an unacceptable number of deaths have occurred. So I ask MEC Mchunu, have we now reached that unacceptable number of deaths on Fields Hill. We as the community are demanding that he immediately sign an order banning all heavy trucks from Fields Hill and we will accept nothing less” add Councillor Crouch.

For more information on the protest action, contact Councillor Crouch on 073 418 6996 or Councillor Brauteseth on 083 766 4657.
