Down memory lane

Back to school after 75 years!

IT was a trip down memory lane for Margaret Ann Bester (nee Smyth) when she attended an art exhibition at her old school, Glenwood Junior Primary School.

Margaret joined Glenwood Junior Primary School on 25 January 1937 when it was still called McDonald Road Primary. Walking around the school 75 years later, she said she was amazed by the changes but could not believe the old buildings had been retained including her own class rooms, Classes 1 to Standard 2. Even her old school records had still been kept intact, including everyone who had joined the school in those early days.

Margaret who at the time lived on Ferguson Road, said she and her friend would get a lift to school by an African Rickshaw on the rainy days. During the war her father was sent to Egypt . After Margaret left the school in 1940 she went on to do Domestic Science at Natal Technical College and Durban Business College.

She now resides in Hillary and is a great-grandmother.
