Porties victorious after nail biting match

Port Natal's seven-a-side team walked off with the coveted trophy after beating rivals, Maritzburg College in the finals.

PORT Natal School took part in the inaugural 7-a-side rugby tournament hosted by Voortrekker High School in Pietermaritzburg recently which saw the local lads put on a sterling display of schoolboy rugby that had spectators on the edge of their seats.

Participating schools included Voortrekker, Hilton College, Westville Boys’ High, Maritzburg College, Weston Agricultural, St Charles College and the KZN Schools 7’s team. The tournament was held over two Friday evenings.

During the pool stage, Port Natal team captained by Merlynn Pieterse ended top of their pool after beating St Charles 35 – 7 and Voortrekker 38 – 5. During the knockout stages Port Natal advanced to the Cup semi finals were they played against Hilton College. In a hard fought match the Port Natal team beat Hilton 24 – 10 to advance them into the Cup finals.

The final match was against Maritzburg College after they beat Westville Boys’ High in their semi final. The final match promised to be a epic battle between the two top teams. Port Natal has not had the opportunity to play against Matitzburg College for a long time and the Portie boys were very excited. As anticipated, the final had the spectators on the edge of their seats with both teams running in some great tries.

With 30 seconds left on the clock College led 19 – 17 with the final line out of the match belonging to the Portie team. After winning the line out the Port Natal boys managed to score the try that would win them the game. The conversion was unsuccessful but the final whistle blew with the final score 23 – 19 to Port Natal School.
