Tree labelling spreads across Berea

Residents are invited to get involved in a tree labelling initiative at Sutton, Umbilo and Bulwer Parks.

THREE city parks are about to join the project to label trees in public spaces. The initiative, a joint WESSA Durban branch and eThekwini Metro Parks and Natural Resources Department project, will be extended to Sutton Park, Umbilo Park and Bulwer Park on Saturday 28 September.

These will be community events, with plenty for willing hands to do. Work at each park will start at 9am; while specialists will ensure the right identification is made, residents armed with step ladders and screwdrivers will be able to join in.

“The initiative aims to raise awareness about the marvellous natural resources Durban has, and to help people learn to distinguish indigenous and exotic trees,” says Margaret Burger, acting chairperson of the Durban WESSA Branch.
