‘Quins secure first win of the season
Umbilo Harlequins first side took on Umzinto at the ICC venue winning by 64 runs.
RAIN washed out play at all but one of Umbilo Harlequins lower league Sunday teams. On Sunday, 24 November, the third side took on DHS /Rhythm 4 at S.L. Singh 1, just north of the Umgeni river adjacent to the N2. This 30 over division 1 league match was reduced to 25 overs a side by mutual agreement.
‘Quins 3 set a target of 118 runs, primarily through contributions of 23 runs by brett Williams, 16 runs by Josh Henry, 15 runs by Coennie Germishuizen and 11 by John Meintjies.
DHS/ Rhythm 4 were restricted to 116 runs for nine wickets in 25 overs. Warren Torguis, Brett Williams, Josh Henry, Coennie Germishuizen and C. Reid were all rewarded with two wickets for their bowling endeavours. ‘Quins won this closely contested encounter by just two runs. The sixth team lost their division five match against Newlands three at Newlands Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The first side arrived at the I.C.C venue at Umzinto and batted first on a true wicket with a very heavy outfield with lethargic ball velocity across the surface of the field. Just thirteen boundaries were struck during the course of both innings with ‘Quins striking ten of them. Opener Kevin Kettle struck a majestic innings consisting of 79 runs, including three maximums and four fours. George Smith compiled a useful innings of 27 runs in the middle order including three fours and Sheldon Swanepoel chipped in with a classy little knock of a dozen runs. ‘Quins amassed 161 runs and were dismissed in the 45th over.
‘Quins fast bowler again performed admirably with ten consecutive overs conceding 24 runs, claiming one wicket. Willem (Wessel) Fourie in his comeback game after a lengthy break, took up the other openers role conceding 21 runs in 6 overs capturing two top order batsmen and Dieter Liebenberg was outstanding with 10 overs of right arm wrist spin, claiming the wickets of Umzinto’s entire middle order for 21 runs. Andre Viljoen bowled tidy medium pacers with four consecutive maidens in nine overs getting one wicket for 25 runs and Kalvin Venter sent down two overs of right arm orthodox slow bowling to bag one wicket for just three runs. ‘Quins won by 64 runs and secured their first win of the current season with a bonus point.
