Durban to erect monument for Madiba

Mayor of Durban, James Nxumalo announced at a special meeting of council today that the city will erect a monument in honour of Nelson Mandela.

So said eThekwini Mayor, James Nxumalo at a special meeting of council in the Durban City Hall on Monday morning. Plans for the monument will be finalised at a meeting of council early in the New Year.

In line with the week long national mourning for Madiba, a memorial service will take place from 11am on Tuesday. There will be public viewings in Umlazi and KwaMashu and the Durban City Hall. Durban citizens who want to pay their respects and say their farewells to Nelson Mandela can take part in any one of the scheduled events to be hosted over the course of the week. A national public holiday has not been declared.
