Thousands flock to stadium to pay their last respects
Durban crowds flock to Moses Mabhida Stadium for the memorial service for Nelson Mandela.
ABOUT 80 000 people from Durban and beyond descended on the Moses Mabidha stadium for the memorial service of Nelson Mandela today, Friday 13 December. The programme started at 10am and will continue until late this afternoon. Choirs took to the stage and entertained the crowds streaming into the stadium with gospel and struggle songs. Former President Thabo Mbeki will deliver the main address and dignitaries, including KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu and higher education Minister, Blade Nzimande will also address the crowd. Leaders from different religious groups are prepapring to lead the public in prayer at the stadium later today.The day’s proceedings are being shown on big screens dotted around People’s Park. Over the next two days the eThekwini will be hosting memorial services in tribute to Madiba. The state funeral, which takes place on Sunday 15 December will be broadcast live on big screens at Peoples’s Park.
