Resident steps in where DSW fails to tread

A Berea resident and his team cleaned up a pavement in Glenwood, after DSW failed to respond to complaints.

IF you want something done, it’s best to do it yourself! That’s just what Berea resident Wayne Grundy did when he took it upon himself to clean up an unsightly mess on the pavement in Cleveland Road, Glenwood.

Grundy said he had noticed sheets of glass and broken TVs, as well as a mattress, lying on the pavement when his mother was visiting from the UK. “My mother said it looked terrible, and when I complained, she asked why I hadn’t done anything about it,” said Grundy.

He contacted Durban Solid Waste to report the mess, but two weeks passed and still the unsightly mess remained. With no word from DSW, Grundy decided to do something about the mess himself.

Grundy, together with his staff Brandon Pillay, James Faro and Sbongeseli Mavundla, got to work to clean up the pavement, removing the large sheets of broken glass, beer bottles, food, and old TV and other rubbish. Ward councillor Nicole Graham said she had contacted Brian Mthembu of DSW to investigate why the matter had not been attended to after if had been reported via the Sizakala Centre e-mail address.

When invited to visit the cleaned site, Berea Mail noticed another large pile of rubbish on the road outside Cleveland Mansions, as well as an unsightly pile inside the property. “It’s a complete disgrace inside this property. Rubbish is just piling up, the stench of rat urine and dagga smoke permeates the air. I suggested DSW get someone over there, there are children playing among the rubbish, rat faeces and broken glass too,” said Grundy.
