Jazz trio for UKZN
The Bruce Baker Fire Trio will kick of the Centre for Jazz's 2014 music calendar.
THE Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at UKZN is proud to present the first gig of 2014, the Bruce Baker Fire Trio, on Wednesday 12 February at 6pm.
Bruce Baker began his professional music career in early 1996 by joining instrumental band Landscape Prayers. The band recorded three albums (all nominated for SAMA best instrumental album), and performed nationally and internationally. In late 1997, he became a member of the popular rock band Squeal. They recorded the album ‘Civilized’ (nominated for a SAMA Award for Best Rock Album 1999) and an EP ‘Begin’ for Internet release with the group. The band extensively toured South Africa and England.
1999 brought about a stylistic change to Bruce when he joined the jazz group ‘Tonk’. This opened doors to working with various artists in the jazz field including Winston Mankuku, Darius Brubeck, Natalie Rungan, Melvin Peters, Dr Mike Rossi, Concord Nkabinde, Feya Faku, Monette Sudler (USA), Dr Willie Hill and Ron McCurdy (USA), and the Cape Town Jazz Orchestra.
Throughout the years he has done numerous recording sessions for wide variety of artists . Bruce has also performed in a variety of theatre shows and has taught jazz drum set and rhythm studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2002.
The Bruce Baker Fire trio is Bruce Baker on drums, Ildo Nandja on bass, and Burton Naidoo on piano. The trio will perform some less familiar standards and some original compositions by Burton Naidoo.
