Road collapse leaves giant sinkhole

A giant sinkhole has raised the concerns of local councillor, Jethro Lefevre.

JUST six weeks after a leak on Riley Road in Overport was repaired, a section of the road about 20m away from the initial repairs collapsed on Monday morning, leaving a giant sinkhole.

According to ward councillor Jethro Lefevre, heavy rains experienced recently underwashed the pipes, causing this sinkhole.

“At 7am this morning (Monday), the water department arrived and turned the water off, leaving residents without water for hours. Now there’s this great big gaping hole in the road and residents have been left without water. You can see how badly water has been underwashed by the size of the hole and I am concerned by how much damage has been done underneath the road that is not yet evident,” said Lefevre.

The water department arrived at 2.40pm to attend to the problem.
