Traders tamper with robots

Traders are tampering with trafflic lights, and getting paid for it.

eTHEKWINI Transport authorities are attending to the numerous faulty traffic lights on Rick Turner Road. Authorities are trying to make the traffic lights vandal proof.

According to a motorist who travels along Rick Turner every day, the traffic lights are out on Rick Turner Road at Spine Road and at the Bellair Road intersection every morning. The woman said she suspected traders were tampering with them to get tips from motorists when they take on directing traffic themselves.

Andrew Aucamp from eThekwini Transport Authority, said: “This assumption is correct. The traders cause a short, resulting in signals flashing and then they go and collect money for it. We installed vandal resistant cover plates, but now they use a crowbar to break our cover plates.”
