Glenwood goes green

Residents decide to take on 'green' issues in Glenwood and Umbilo.

GLENWOOD residents are on a mission to turn the area green.

According to ward councillor Nicole Graham, a group of residents have formed a basic working committee to drive development in the area, following discussions of various green issues in Glenwood, Umbilo and surrounding areas.

“We feel it is vital that we find new ways of using public open spaces so they will be of use to the community, and not as dumping sites or breeding grounds for crime and other social ills. Urban gardens and farming are a perfect example, as they revitalise parks and open spaces and also provide healthy, free food. There is a lot of interest in this and some great examples throughout the city,” said Graham.

The group also discussed revitalising the d’Moss space on Lena Ahrens (Manning) Road, which is intended to provide a link between Bulwer Park and Pigeon Valley.

This was raised with Kenneth Mabila of eThekwini’s Natural Resources department and is being driven by residents Di Smyly and Johan Bodenstein.

“We also discussed the re-establishment of a recycling centre in Glenwood. This also has the potential to create employment, as many people in the area currently collect glass and paper to recycle to earn a small income. A number of good ideas were raised and will be expanded upon in coming months,” she said.
