City tardy in fixing leak

A leak in Earl Haig Road took nearly a month to fix, wasting thousands of litres of water in the process.

A RESIDENT in Earl Haig Road was shocked by the length of time it took for the municipality to fix a leak near his home.

According to Clive Thompson, he reported the water leak to the Durban Municipality on 14 February and the leak was only fixed on 11 March.

“Since I reported the leak, I followed up on the progress four times and was told that other residents had also reported the same water leak. I was also told, after my fourth call, that the request to repair the water leak would now be upgraded to urgent. That was on Thursday, 20 February. In the meantime, the road has become very bumpy and potholes are now beginning to show. How much water has been lost beneath the surface?” he asked.

He said he had noticed the household water pressure had dropped as well. “Perhaps the municipality could measure the amount of water that has been lost or wasted and be held responsible for that loss as householders are. Perhaps the equivalent amount of money (for the water loss) could be given to a needy charity or some worthy cause,” he said.

He said it was a great pity that such an amount of water went to waste when other communities were doing so much to get running water.
