City extends water services to rural areas

Council has approved at R116-million water project which will expand the supply of water to rural areas.

AT last week’s council meeting in KwaMashu, council approved an investment of R116-million water protect that will expand its water supply capacity to growing developments in rural areas.

Council approved the funds for the roll-out of water services to large households in rural areas under the Ingonyama Trust land. City Manager, S’bu Sithole said the current supply catered for smaller rural households, but that there had been an upsurge in the number of bigger houses. “These houses have replaced the traditional ‘umuzi’ and are modern houses which can be compared to similar houses in the up market suburbs of eThekwini. These areas usually experience problems with the supply of water or intermittent supply due to various infrastructure constraints and source issues.”

Sithole said various initiatives were being carried out to address the source constraints which form part of a long term planning of water resources for the c ity.

Areas which will be targeted include Wards 2, 3, 56, 67, 95, 96, 98, 99 and 100.
