Switch off for Earth Hour

eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo has urged residents and businesses to join the global Earth Hour awareness on Saturday.

DURBAN residents and businesses are urged to observe Earth Hour on Saturday, 29 March by switching off all lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

The appeal came from Mayor, James Nxumalo who urged Durbanites to join millions of people around the world in an act of symbolic unity to raise awareness of using energy wisely to mitigate the impact of climate change.

“You are called upon to not only switch off at home, but also at work. Make sure the non-essential lights in your building are switched off,” he said.

Nxumalo said people were becoming more aware of their impact on the climate, but that there was still a lot of work that needed to be done to ensure we live sustainable lifestyles. “In this regard, the Municipality will host a Sustainable Living Exhibition from 22-24 August where a host of products and services will be showcased to make our City a more sustainable one,” he said.

“As a Municipality, we are proud to be able to support the global Earth Hour campaign and call on all residents and businesses to not only support this effort, but also to commit to working in harmony with nature to mitigate the impact of climate change,” he said.

Earth Hour’s unique display of darkness has become a global phenomenon with millions of individuals coming together each year. 2013 saw a record-breaking 154 countries join the world’s biggest celebration under the stars.
