Cleaning contractor abandons site
Municipal cleaners were threatened by striking contract workers in Glenwood.

CONTINGENCY plans are being made to sort out the filth piling up in Glenwood and surrounding suburbs after workers from a company contracted to do the cleaning on behalf of the municipality abandoned the site.
Ward 33 councillor, Nicole Graham said she had put in a request with solid waste to do something about cleaning up the area. She was informed that certain contracts were in the process of termination after a contractor had abandoned the site.
“The municipality said it sent employees into the area to clean, in particular Che Guevara (Moore) Road, but when these staff were working in the road, they were threatened by people believed to be employees of the contractors on strike, who forced them to leave the area.
“At the moment we are trying to make some contingency plans,” said Simon Nyawo, cleansing and solid waste manager.
Graham said the municipality needed to find a way around this. “I requested cleanups be supported by Metro Police as I refuse to accept that we allow the filthiness to continue because of some disgruntled employees,” she said.
She said she was increasingly coming under fire for the spreading dirt and grime in Glenwood.
“We need to find a way to curb illegal dumping and maybe also get an ‘adopt a spot’ up and running,” she said.
