Bus shelter caged up

Residents are relieved an old bush shelter has been caged off.

THE old trolley bus shelter on North Ridge Road has been caged up, thanks to ward 31 councillor, Jethro Lefevre.

Resident, Chantel Hagglund, requested the old trolley permanent bus shelter on North Ridge Road be bricked up, similar to what had been undertaken in Durban North to a similar type of bus shelter.

“Unfortunately, due to the declining bus service, the bus stop is not frequently used and has become a haven for vagrants who defecate at the shelter, light fires at night, and go through the black bags left out by residents, leaving the rotting remains of the rubbish strewn across the shelter for days at a time. The shelter has, thus, become an eye sore,” she said.

According to Chantel, there had also been muggings at the shelter, resulting in the remaining bus commuters too scared to sit or even walk past the bus shelter.”Metro Police tried on numerous occasions to take the vagrants away, however, by the next day, they all return,” she said.

Lefevre got onto the municipality to get things done, and was pleased to report that the architectural maintenance department had committed to caging up the bus shelter, much to the relief of residents.
