Alliance Francaise opens new children’s classroom

A new classroom was opened to provide French lessons for children.

ALLIANCE Française opened a new classroom for children at its premises during a visit by Mrs Elisabeth Barbier, Ambassador of France in South Africa who attended the annual seminar of French Embassy services at Alliance Française.

The room was named ‘Room Raymond Nazar’ after the late honorary consul of Belgium who passed away in December. Former Chairman of Alliance Française in Durban and project manager of its building construction in Morningside in 1991, Nazar had dedicated his life to education and culture.

“The inauguration, in the presence of Mr Nazar’s wife Pamela and son Marc, the Consul of Belgium, and his grandchildren was a very moving moment. We want to dedicate this bright classroom, a symbol of education for the youth, to Raymond, who was a godfather for Alliance Française for years,” said Director, Sarah Doignon.

French lessons for children are offered by a group of dedicated and enthusiastic teachers. Lessons are fun and interactive including music, art, storytelling, and involve as many learning skills as the group is capable of taking part in at their age and level. “Learning materials are professionally chosen and where need be, tailored to suit the children. This dynamic learning environment encourages youngsters to speak, sing and eventually read and write French. A library of numerous books and movies is at the disposal of the families invited to regular storytelling/reading in French, English or even isiZulu,” said Sarah.

Weekly classes of one hour are offered for four to six year olds and one-and-a-half hours for seven year olds and older, on afternoons or Saturday mornings. Parents can enjoy breakfasts and French meals in the beautiful hidden garden of Café St Germain while waiting for their children.
