Patrollers needed for local community watch group.
GLENWOOD Community Watch (GCW) is looking for new members.
The group, which was re-instated in February 2013 with the intent of making the neighbourhood a safe place for families to live and enjoy by combating crime.
The GCW covers the area from Rick Turner Road to Alan Paton Road, and from Umbilo to South Ridge Road.
Residents can get involved in the group, either by joining its patrols or by joining its awareness WhatsApp group, where residents can be the ears and eyes of the community.
The GCW also uses a Facebook page which forms a cohesive bond between members and the general public by posting updates on crime in the area along with warnings and notices about meetings.
The group has around 45 patrolling members who work two-hour shifts a few nights a month and are happy to spend time patrolling and connecting up with new friends in the community.
According to one patroller, Patrick Royal, the concept of patrols needs to be explained.
“We are out to make a difference in the community and to keep an eye on the area and work together with SAPS and Metro police. We work within a Code of Conduct, knowing right and wrong legal procedures. Patrollers are a bunch of guys with different backgrounds and a lot of them are professionals. It is great to connect with them, it is much more than just about patrolling,” he said.
There is a WhatsApp group solely for patrollers, and an emergency community watch number, which is controlled by Karen Cotton, the GCW administrator and secretary, which is connected via radio to patrollers.
“Two times a month the GCW does a large patrol where interested community members are encouraged to go along and see what it’s like, and if they would like to join the patrols or connect up at one of the communal braais in the park,” said Patrick.
If residents would like to join the GCW mailing list or GCW Crime-awareness WhatsApp group and get involved with working as the eyes and ears of the GCW, they should contact Karen.
Financial assistance in the form of cash donations or donations of decals, jackets, training and two-way radios are also appreciated.
“Don’t leave getting involved until you are affected by crime, get involved now and help make a difference in the community,” said Patrick.
The GCW number is 076 665 9144 and the email address is sector2communitywatch@live.co.za
