Litter still a problem in Cleaver Road
Save Our Berea says the municipality needs to take action against people flouting by-laws.
LITTER continues to plague residents in Cleaver Road where indiscriminate dumping has left an eyesore on the pavement on Cleaver Road.
The ongoing problem is cause of concern for Wayne Grundy, a member of Save Our Berea who took it upon himself to clean up the pavement in Cleveland Place earlier this year, after DSW failed to respond to requests to clean up the mess.
“I am trying once again to get action as the situation is getting worse. It seems residents from Cleveland Mansions are throwing their rubbish over the wall onto the pavement. As a main thoroughfare artery road around the Berea it’s an absolute eyesore and a disgrace. I did clean up on the Salvation Army side a few months ago, and was accused of not giving the DSW a chance to do their job! Something needs to happen to sort this out,” he said.
Kevin Dunkley from Save Our Berea said: “Our mayor and city manager have made it clear they intend to make the Durban a world-class city. But while we allow the by-laws to be ignored and by not taking action, allow anti-social behaviour, then we have no chance. Most of these 'broken window' issues are easy to fix and really require a concerted effort by the departments concerned. We should be adopting a zero-tolerance attitude to this type of behaviour which drags Durban down to unacceptable levels. We need to confront the head of Durban Solid Waste and be quite frank. You are not doing the job that we, the ratepayers, pay you to do.”
He said DSW should commit to cleaning the mess and should enlist the assistance of Metro Police to warn those responsible that if it happens again they will be charged.
“Get hold of the owner of the block of flats and let's name and shame until somebody takes responsibility,” he said.
Neeri Moodley from DSW said she had forwarded the complaint to the relevant department for investigation and the area would be cleaned today (15 May).
