Thousands of SmartCards issued

70 000 SmartCards issued for new transport fare payment system in Durban.

eTHEKWINI Municipality’s introduction of the MUVO SmartCard, the new payment method for public transport which has replaced the old coupon system, has been positively received by the city’s commuters, with 70 000 cards having been issued to date.

“The cards have been phased in over two years and, as with any change, there is a period of adjustment. We would like to thank the commuters in Durban for their patience as we phased in the Muvo cards and for their willingness to take up the new system. Going forward we are all going to feel the positive effects of a more efficient, faster and safer public transport network,” said Thami Manyathi, head of eThekwini Transport Authority.

The introduction of the card was the initial phase in the municipality’s plan for GO!Durban, the new Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN), which will greatly improve public transport bringing South African Cities’ transport systems in line with world standards, and is integral to the City of Durban’s vision to make it Africa’s most liveable and caring city by 2030.

Currently the MUVO Card can only be used on People Mover, Mynah and Durban Transport buses, however as the new GO!Durban network is phased in, the card will eventually be accepted on various modes of public road transport.
