No traffic calming for ‘death hill’, says City
Despite regular fatal crashes on John Zikhali Road (Sydenham Hill), the eThekwini Transport Authority said no traffic calming would be installed.
Stop the carnage on ‘death’ hill, plead residents
MOTORISTS travelling along John Zikhali (Sydenham) Road should be cautious and obey traffic rules at all times.
That’s the response from Head of eThekwini Communications, Tozi Mthethwa to requests from residents living along the road for safety measures to be implemented following a string of collisions and the death of two young men who were walking along John Zikhali Road when they were mowed down by an out-of-control vehicle in May.
John Zikhali, also dubbed ‘death hill’ has become notorious for the number of collisions, fatalities and speeding motorists who use the road.
Residents live in constant fear and have appealed on a number of occasions for authorities to implement safety measures.
Berea Mail has discovered that eThekwini Transport Authority had monitored the intersection closeley from a traffic signals point of view with traffic counts done in 2010 and 2012 to ascertain whether traffic warranted signalisation.
However, Mthethwa said recent traffic counts revealed traffic volumes did not necessitate the installation of traffic calming measures.
“We urge motorists to please be cautious whilst travelling on our roads and obey traffic rules at all times,” Mthethwa added.
