Reduce electricity usage, urges City

Durban residents are urged to switch off and reduce their electricity usage in the face of further loadshedding by Eskom tonight.

eTHEKWINI Municipality has alerted its residents to reduce their electricity usage as a matter of urgency. In a media release on Tuesday afternoon, the municipality said Eskom had  announced a load reduction alert nationally after losing a further 600MW on the system. This is to be enforced immediately until 9pm tonight, Tuesday 17 June.

It urged its customers  to switch off ALL non-essential appliances during this period in an attempt to avoid rotational load shedding. Should it become necessary to implement load-shedding, eThekwini will enact Stage 1 of the Load-Shedding Schedule on its website link; https://www.durban.gov.za/City_Services/electricity/Load_Shedding/Documents/Schedule_Stage2and3.pdf

This link is applicable for Stages 1, 2 & 3.

It advised customers to switch off all appliances during the power outage to minimise the risk of overload tripping on “waiting load”.

“This is a national emergency and the Municipality makes an urgent plea to all customers to participate in the national call to reduce electricity usage immediately,” said Municipal spokesman Thabo Mofokeng.
