More dustbins please Metro
Something needs to be done to stop the rubbish alongside Feilden Drive, says resident.
FEILDEN Drive resident, Deon Braun wants more rubbish bins placed along Feilden Drive in Glenmore to deal with the litter that lies strewn along the side of the road.
Frustrated with the never-ending sight of litter, Braun said he noticed there was only one rubbish bin which was falling to pieces and was not ‘monkey-proof’ along the more than 3km stretch of road.
“We have a fantastic beachfront thanks to the hard work of many stakeholders, but now could we focus on the suburbs where the people who pay their rates and taxes live?
Having one dustbin for a long stretch of road is not good enough – of course there is going to be litter thrown away by careless people if bins are not present and visible. I’ve run and driven the length of Feilden and Oliver Lea Drives and there is only one dustbin near the uppermost park. The reality is that this road is foot trafficked and with school children and adults walking it daily, it is littered with discarded cans, bottles and wrappers. If you drive past the school you’ll see that there is always a pile of litter. Dustbins here please Metro!” he said.
Braun said he had emailed councillors to no avail. Another issue he wanted raise with the municipality is what he describes as the strange cut-and-leave-lawns policy, he assumes is the fault of the Parks Department.
“The managers and team that cut the lawns and verges don’t seem to see litter as a part of their job to beautify the city. Litter gets cut into smaller and smaller pieces but the problem is that some plastics take hundreds of years to decompose, and they eventually leach poisons into the soil we rely on for life,” he said.
He suggested getting one or two people on the team to pick up the litter before it got shredded and blown all over by the wind. “To me it’s a no-brainer. I want to know what the Durban Metro’s policy is on the management of litter in suburbs,” he said.
Local councillor Nicole Graham said she had contacted DSW about the issue and was waiting for feedback.
