Burglars hit Durban homes, businesses

Blue Security are urging locals to be aware that criminals are breaking into businesses through the ceiling.

BUSINESS owners are urged to be vigilant following recent burglaries where thieves gained entry through the roof and fled with computers and other valuables.

Blue Security managing director Henk van Bemmelen said in the most recent incident in Umbilo early on Monday morning, thieves had broken into a business in Sydney Road through the roof of the property.

“The gang ransacked the company’s offices and reception area and fled with cameras, cellphones and a computer,” he said.

In another incident in West Street, burglars broke into a business premises through the roof of the property and fled with shoes.

Van Bemmelen urged business owners to install sensors linked to their alarm system, in the roof of their properties to provide an early warning system.

“Housebreakers are always looking for ways to gain entry onto a property in a way that will buy them the most time before the alarm detects their presence. It’s important for business owners to regularly test their alarm systems and make sure any weak points, like roofs, are covered with sensors,” he said.

He added that it was also advisable to install an alarm sensor on the property’s main gate, which would trigger the alarm if anyone attempted to derail the gate.

Van Bemmelen said housebreakers had derailed the gate of a house in Cherry Place in Musgrave before forcing open the front door and security gate. The gang fled with a television, jewellery, iPads, a computer and a BMW.

He added that Blue Security armed reaction officers had arrested five housebreakers following a burglary in Braeside Road in Rossburgh.

“The housebreakers were handed over to the police to be charged with vandalism and trespassing,” he said.

Housebreakers also targeted businesses in Sydney Road and Moore Road as well as residential properties in Essenwood Road and Downing Road over the past week.

Van Bemmelen urged Berea and Umbilo residents to be vigilant following an armed robbery at 9am in the morning in Berea Road where three men held up their victim with a knife and fled with a laptop, cellphone and cash.

In a second incident, a domestic worker was mugged of her cellphone while she walked to work in Buxton Gardens Road, in Umbilo.
