Shelter needed for evicted residents

An appeal goes out to the community for temporary shelter for people evicted from a home they rented at in Morningside.

COUNCILLOR Martin Meyer is appealing to the community to help offer temporary shelter to a group of residents who were evicted from their home on Friday.

According to one of the residents, they were told to vacate the residence in Ninth Avenue, Morningside on Friday, and informed that the property had been sold eight months ago.

“We have all lived on the property for a while, however no one told us we would have to leave. We weren't given any warning. The electricity was cut by the municipality before Christmas, but we weren't told why. On Friday morning we were told by a member of the court that we had to get out. Most of the people staying on the property have nowhere to go, luckily I work nearby and can store my items and stay there this weekend,” he said.

Meyer said Metro Police had warned they would be back to impound the items of furniture which are still lying on the pavement outside the home. He said he was concerned the residents one of whom is a pensioner who is a diabetic, and another who is on a disability pension, had been left on the street.

Marie-Anne Horsley, one of the residents, said she had no family in the area, but had a sister who lived in Johannesburg.

“I don't have the money to get there, living on my pension. My sugar has been up and down,” she said.

Meyer said he was fortunate to get accommodation for Marie-Anne at the Salvation Army, however he was still concerned about the others.

“I can't help with the eviction as it is a private matter, but these people have nowhere to go. I keep saying there is no proper shelter in Durban, which needs to be addressed, it is shocking that these elderly and sick people have no place to stay now,” he said.

If anyone can help with temporary shelter for these residents, contact Councillor Meyer on 078 729 8768.
