Double murder suspect arrested in Cato Manor

A man wanted for the murder of a couple in Eshowe was arrested by Cato Manor SAPS and Durban Organised Crime Unit.

DURBAN Organised Crime Unit and Cato Manor police made a breakthrough on 1 March when they arrested a 24-year-old man who had been on the run for the past two months.

The arrested suspect was wanted for a double murder in the Mbongolwane area, Eshowe, which he allegedly committed in January. He was transferred to Mbongolwane police station to face charges.

On 28 January at around 6.30pm, a man and his wife were in their homestead when they were approached by the suspect. It is alleged the suspect shot and killed both victims, Thembinkosi Mthethwa (57) and his wife Bongi (48). The man fled the scene on foot after the incident. The motive for the shooting is still unknown. Two counts of murder were opened at Mbongolwane police station for further investigation.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded members of the Cato Manor police for tracing and arresting the suspect.

“I strongly condemn such a barbaric attack directed against elderly people. We will work around the clock to establish who is the main culprit behind this double murder,” she said.
