Engen robbery suspect arrested

One of the five men involved in a cash-in-transit heist and armed robbery at Engen in Peter Mokaba Road has been arrested.

A MAN has been arrested in connection with the cash-in-transit heist at the Engen garage in Morningside on Saturday.

Five men allegedly opened fire on a cash-in-transit vehicle before fleeing with two boxes of money. Surveillance footage of the armed robbery at a garage went viral.

One of the security guards at the station was wounded in the robbery, and remains in hospital in a stable condition. A second guard suffered minor injuries in the shootout.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane confirmed a 32-year-old man had been arrested on 9 March and has been linked to the cash-in-transit heist.

He is due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court facing charges of armed robbery as well as attempted murder.

He said the investigation was ongoing and the community was urged to assist in tracing the other four suspects.
