Jewellery conman targets elderly

Brighton Beach police appeal to the public to be aware of a jewellery conman targetting elderly.

BRIGHTON Beach police appeal to the greater Durban community, especially senior citizens to be wary of a jewellery con man doing the rounds.

According to Captain Louise Le Roux, spokesman for Brighton Beach SAPS the young Indian man, approximately 20 to 25 years old, is posing as a coin collector and evaluator.

“He claims that he purchases Kruger coins and other valuable coins/jewellery. He will receive a coin and in an unnoticeable manner swap it with a 50c coin, then wrap it in tape and place it in a glass container telling his victims if it sinks it is not real gold,” she explained.

Le Roux said the man swiftly departs and upon opening the taped coin/jewellery piece, his victims will find that their valuable item has been stolen. “He applies the same principle with other pieces of jewellery such as rings and chains,” she added.

If you are approached by this man, contact the 10111 operator or your nearest police station.
