Natal Scottish Gathering for Durban
Enjoy the Natal Scottish Gathering at Natal Mounted Rifles this Saturday.
THE skirl of pipes and drums will echo around the Natal Mounted Rifles parade ground on Saturday 27 June at 9am when the Natal Scottish Gathering takes place.
The Natal Scottish Gathering dates back to 1946 when the late Mr John Mudie started what was then known as the Durban Dancing Festival.
The Durban and Pietermaritzburg Caledonian Societies then got together and it was decided to rename it the Natal Scottish Gathering with the event taking place alternately each year in the respective towns.
One of the highlights of the earlier gatherings was when it took place at the finish of the Comrades Marathon. With the tremendous growth of the Comrades it became very difficult to combine the two events and eventually the gathering took place independently.
Apart from the competing pipe bands and individual piping and drumming competitions there will also be competitive Highland dancing and finally a massed band display at the end of the day. Refreshments will be available. There will also be a display of military memorabilia and interval entertainment will include a steel drums band, a rope skipping display and a drumming demonstration.
This event is a combined venture of the Rotary Club of Durban and the Kwa-Zulu Natal Piping and Drumming Society.
