Hikers celebrate life

More than 100 hikers took on Sani Pass in the Jade Sky hike this month.

ENTHUSIASTIC hikers took on the Jade Sky Hike at Sani Pass on Sunday, 14 June.

The annual hike is organised in memory of little Jade Preston who passed away from leukaemia. The Sunflower Fund was instrumental in supporting the Preston family during this time, and all funds raised on the day were donated to this great cause raising much needed awareness for those suffering like Jade did. The 150 hikers chose to challenge themselves to hiking the mountain, while celebrating life, remembering those who were challenged by cancer, and supporting those challenged with cancer at present.

According to Allison Naidoo from The Sunflower Fund, the day was blessed with beautiful weather, glorious sunshine with patches of snow and ice. Old and young enthusiasts braved the 8km pass in fine style. The Midlands 4×4 Club offered breakfast rolls to energise the soul at the start and seconded hikers all the way to the top of Sani Pass and back again until the last hiker was safely back from the challenging 16km round trip.

“An amount of R15 000 was raised for The Sunflower Fund which will go a long way to grow the South African Bone Marrow Registry, by actively educating and recruiting more committed bone marrow stem cell donors,” said Allison.
