Take on Sani walk

Get your hiking boots on and take on Sani Pass, while raising funds for the Childhood Cancer Association (CHOC).

THE 6th Annual CHOC Sani Pass Walk will be on Sunday 9 August from the South African Border Post on Sani Pass to the top of the Pass and back down again – a distance of 16kms in total.

The walk was started by organisers, Joy de Witt and her husband Glenn. Joy and Glenn had a holiday home in Underberg, and wanted to do something for children with cancer. The idea to get people to raise funds for CHOC while undertaking this hike was born.

In the first year there were 40 walkers, and there are now 400 walkers who take part.

“There are different reasons why people take part in the walk. In the first year, there was a man who walked with his two-year-old son, Sayurin Archary, on his shoulders. The next year Sayurin died from a tumour in his bladder, and his family do the walk in honour of him each year. The summit is really steep, so you need something to motivate you,” said regional manager of CHOC KZN, Agie Govender.

This year's walk will be in memory of Maryke Viljoen, who was a cancer survivor and artist, and who wanted to give back. She painted murals on the walls of the CHOC House to brighten up the lives of children battling cancer.

The cost to take part in the walk is R225 and R100 for children under the age of 16, which includes a meal from the Sani Round Table and a T-shirt. Walkers will need a valid passport, a 4×4 or 2×4 vehicle to get to the border, food and drinks for the walk and suitable hiking shoes and warm clothing.

Registration will be at the Grind Café, Trout Walk, Underberg, on Saturday 8 August from 2pm to 6pm and at the SA Border Post, Sani Pass, on Sunday 9 August from 7.30am to 8.30am.
