Durban welcomes the Loeries
The Loeries Creative Week will be in Durban from 10 to 16 August.
FOR the first time, Durban is playing host to the Loeries Creative Week from 10 to 16 August.
“We’re looking forward to hosting the event in a city with such cultural and creative potential. The move to Durban is at the perfect time – the city has just been named #7 on the New York Times Places to Go in 2015 and we’ll be there,” said Loeries CEO, Andrew Human.
EThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo, welcomed the Loeries saying the Creative Week would provide a platform for knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, networking and most importantly all those in the advertising, media and branding industry would be able to showcase their talent and be recognised for their innovative ideas.
While Durban might be the focus of this year’s Loeries Creative Week, the entire KwaZulu-Natal is in the middle of a creative renaissance of sorts, and the province has put renewed focus on developing the creative arts by establishing initiatives like the KZN Music House and the KZN Film Commission.
“The boom in the sub-sectors of the creative industry like music, film production, advertising and script writing is certainly offering business and employment opportunities for our young people,” said KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Michael Mabuyakhulu.
Running alongside the Loeries Creative Week is the Loeries Fringe Festival. The Fringe will give the local community an opportunity to create fun events to entertain and express their own creativity, and for the first time the Festival will also include the food and craft markets such as the ‘I heart Loeries Market’, a special edition of Durban’s popular monthly design, crafts and food market, ‘I heart Market’.
The 2015 Loeries Creative Week is the single most important week of the creative industry this year, featuring insights and inspiration from global creative heavyweights at the DStv Seminar of Creativity, some fat home-made creative flavour at the Fringe Festival, and finally the Loeries Awards ceremony.
Official events will take place at the Durban ICC and along the Durban beachfront during Loeries Creative Week. For a detailed program, visit: www.loeries.com/loeries2015.aspx?link=festival_programme
