People Mover service disappoints

The municipality has admitted that People Mover stops need cleaning and signage maintenance.

THE People Mover bus service needs a major overhaul. That's the opinion of North Bech resident, Mahmood Vawda, who said his wife uses the bus service often and has been badly treated by some drivers.

“My wife recently wanted to get off at a stop, laden with bags, and requested the driver signal to another bus driver to stop to pick her up, but he wouldn't. She was forced to walk with her bags. The whole system is a mess and the service is not interested in the upkeep of People stops. There was a perspex board showing a map in Sol Harris Road which had fallen off. I watched an inspector pass the sign lying on the floor and not do anything. It has now been taken off totally. There is just so much disrepair at the stops,” he said.

EThekwini head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa, said: all city bus drivers followed a strict code of conduct that they had to adhere to in treating customers with high degree of customer care and courtesy. “The People Mover Management also takes disciplinary steps against drivers who breach customer care practices. In order to report bad driver behaviour, the passenger must give detailed information such as the date, the time and place of the incident as well as driver name or bus registration. This will assist in investigating and dealing with the matter appropriately.”She said the City inspected all the 59 People Mover stops periodically.

“Our inspection last week did indicate that the bus stops require some cleaning and signage maintenance. Contractors will be appointed to go out and clean and maintain the stops as soon as possible,” she said. Customers can report their compliments or complaints to People Mover at 031 309 2731 or 031 309 2730 or email: People.mover@hotmail.com
