Employee shoots armed robber

A criminal was shot by a business employee in an attempted armed robbery in Umbilo.

TWO suspects were shot during a robbery in Umbilo on Friday morning.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said three alleged robbers, one of them armed with a firearm, held up the employee of a business in Sydney Road at around 8am.

“The armed robber cocked his gun but it jammed and a staff member pulled out his firearm and shot him. A second suspect was also shot during the incident but managed to flee the scene,” he said.

Jackson advised business owners and staff to be vigilant especially when opening and closing or making trips to the bank as these were prime times for robberies.

“We advise business owners to survey the outside of the premises before opening up and closing to ensure there are no suspicious vehicles or individuals hanging around. When going to the bank always take a staff member with you and be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you are accosted by a robber it is safer to hand over your valuables than to risk injury by fighting back,” he said.

Jackson advised business owners to contact the police and their security company to report any suspicious activity near their business premises.

“Criminals often stake out their victims before striking so taking a proactive stance against crime can serve as a deterrent,” he said.

Umbilo SAPS attended the scene of the crime.
