Child safety rules

Umbilo SAPS urges children to take note of child protection rules, to keep safe every day.

UMBILO SAPS urges children to be safety conscious.

According to Lt Pumzile Makaula, it is important for children to realise the police are their friends and they are there to protect them.

“Children are urged to always tell their family or friends where they are going. If they are sad they must tell someone they trust. They must also know that guns are dangerous and they should never touch a gun. They should tell an adult immediately if they see one,” she said.

She urged children not to take money, gifts or sweets from strangers and to never play with things that can hurt them.

“Another important safety rule is to not fight or bully. Talk it out or walk away,” she said.

She said if a police official is not wearing a uniform, children are urged to ask him or her to show them his or her identity card, so they can be sure of who they are.

“Children must take heed of these rules and be safe, and to let every day be child protection day,” she said.
