K9 Unit makes break-through arrest

The Durban K9 Unit made a big arrest of three wanted suspects on Tuesday morning.

THE Durban K9 Unit made an outstanding arrest of three wanted suspects in Greyville in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to Captain TD Gumede of Berea SAPS, the suspects were wanted for a number of house-breaking cases and car thefts in the greater Durban area. W/O Ryan Charlton was patrolling near Cowey and Argyle Roads when he noticed a suspicious vehicle and the occupants throwing something out of their vehicle before speeding up the road. The officer chased the vehicle and called for back-up. The suspects, travelling in a blue older model Mercedes Benz, eventually stopped in Avondale Road, where Charlton and his team arrested the three suspects.

The three suspects and their vehicle were searched and a number of items were recovered. Police recovered metre-long bolt cutters, a wrench and shifting spanner as well as a two-way radio, two sets of gloves and a firearm, which was the object thrown out of the vehicle when Charlton spotted the suspects.

Grant Smith of the Berea CPF and Sector SCF said the dog unit had done a great job. “It is a brilliant arrest and shows criminals that police are out there, and this sends a message to criminals that they will be arrested. Also, the items recovered look like these suspects were involved in a big syndicate. House break-ins have been on the increase in the area.”

Smith encouraged the community to always be alert and aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity to the SAPS on 10111.
