New fence for hockey grounds

Ward councillor Nicole Graham is pleased budget has been made available to fix the fence at Queensmead Hockey Stadium.

A NEW fence is on the cards for the Queensmead Hockey Grounds in Umbilo.

According to ward councillor Nicole Graham, a couple of months ago she enquired with the Parks Department division which deals with stadia as to what could be done about maintenance at the stadium.

“I was told there was no budget available for this and that I would have to wait for the Commonwealth Games budget to come into effect, as the stadium is to be used for hockey and baseball during the games,” said Graham.

Graham recently received an email from the engineering department stating that budget had been made available to fix the fence and gate at the stadium.

“The contractor will be appointed shortly. I had a site meeting last week with potential contractors and have been told the fence will be removed and replaced with the same concrete pallisading. I think this is great, as the stadium is in need of attention, and I am hoping it will make a big difference,” she said.

Graham said regarding the safety aspect, she felt the fence would make the stadium secure and there would no longer be a thoroughfare for people who shouldn’t be on the stadium grounds.
