School boy hijacked
AN 18-year-old schoolboy was hijacked outside Durban Girls’ High School on Thursday morning.
At 11.30am the Glenwood High pupil was parked outside the school when two armed men approached him and forced him out the car.
The men searched him and stole his cellphone, wallet containing cash and GPS and drove away in his vehicle, a Ford Fiesta 2011 model.
The car was recovered in H Section, Umlazi. SAPS chased the suspects, who fled in a Toyota Corolla, but the suspects got away.
Cable thieves arrested
On Thursday at 4am the Umbilo/Glenmore Neighbourhood Watch noticed men stealing copper cable in the area.
Four men arrived in Glenmore in a cab and the driver dropped the three men in Hyder Road, then parked next to the Glenmore Supply Store.
The men cut around 37kg of copper cable and put it in the boot of the car.
One of the residents called the watch because of a power cut and members checked video footage from CCTV cameras and saw what had happened.
They called the police. The police phoned the cab owner and told the driver to meet them at the Caltex garage nearby, with the three men in the vehicle.
The driver took the men to the station, where they were all arrested.
Wally Coombe from Umbilo/Glenmore Neighbourhood Watch thanked the Umbilo SAPS for their quick response.
Good convictions
ZIPHOZONKE Mkhize (24) was sentenced to three years in prison for robbery on 2 November.
The man took a cellphone from a 67-year-old woman who was walking in Che Guevara Road on 18 September.
TWO suspects were sentenced for hijacking and kidnapping r at Durban Regional Court.
The first suspect, Eric Sbonelo Mbhele (34), got 18 years in prison and Mduduzi Sbonelo Ngobese was sentenced to 15 years.
The men were arrested on 8 October 2014 for an incident in Gale Place, Umbilo. A man was waiting outside in the car,with his sister, when two men pretending to beg got into their car and drove away with them. The car was recovered and the police arrested the men on the same day.
