THE Durban Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 38-year-old man to 17 years imprisonment for a rape which took place in March last year.
A 10-year-old Chesterville girl had gone to her neighbour to visit her friend. When she arrived, her friend’s father instructed her to go inside the house, where he raped her.
According to Lt Nqobile Gwala from SAPS, the accused gave the victim R2 and advised her to not tell anyone.
“A case of rape was opened at Cato Manor police station for further investigation. The docket was then transferred to Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit who conducted the investigation that led to the arrest of the suspect. He made several court appearances until he was sentenced,” said Lt Gwala.
“These are the most vulnerable groups within our communities and mostly targeted by criminals who take advantage of them. We will make sure that all those who are abusing them are sent to jail for a long time,””said Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
