City deploys security to protect workers

Essential services have been disrupted after municipal workers were threatened and forced to stop work.

ETHEKWINI Municipality is to beef up security to accompany contractors and municipal officials to resume work in affected areas from today, Tuesday, 2 February.
The city has taken this step in an effort to address the interruption of services such as electricity, water supply, housing, roads and stormwater maintenance to residents after a group threatened municipal staff as they tried to carry out their work. Some private sub-contractors were also threatened and were ordered to stop work.
The City is endeavouring to restore services to ratepayers as soon as possible. Areas that were affected will be prioritised and security guards will continue to patrol all depots.
