TWO vehicles, which were hijacked from the Umbilo precinct were recovered by Umbilo SAPS hours after they were taken.
Lieutenant Pumzile Makaula, communications officer at Umbilo SAPS, encouraged residents and the business community to be extra vigilant when arriving and leaving properties as hijacking incidents had increased in the area.
“In the first incident which took place at about 8.50pm, a security company vehicle responded to an alarm activation at a Sydney Road property. As he was leaving, the security officer was approached by two armed men who pointed their firearms at him,” she explained.
Makaula said the security officer was handcuffed and his firearm, cellphone and wallet were taken and the two suspects drove off in his branded vehicle.
In the second incident on Monday night, Makaula said a man and his friend were sitting in his car on Esther Roberts (Frere) Road when two armed men came out from behind them. “The two suspects approached on either side of the vehicle and threatened the driver and his friend with their firearms. The told the two victims to get out of the vehicle and jumped into the luxury car and drove off in the direction of Sydney Road,” Makaula said.
Both vehicles were found abandoned in the area on Tuesday morning. The security vehicle was found on Jameson Crescent and the luxury vehicle was found abandoned near Kenneth Gardens in Walton Place.
Makaula advised the community to refrain from sitting in vehicles parked on the road as motorists parked in stationary cars are soft targets for criminal elements.
