Going ‘all the way’ for CANSA
Three Umbilo residents will be shaving off their hair to raise funds for CANSA.
THREE residents of Umbilo’s MOTH Cottages will dare to go bare in support of this year’s CANSA Shavathon.
According to Louisa Hitchcock, the decision to ‘shed their locks’ was as a result of her knowing a number of people either suffering from cancer, undergoing treatment, or being a cancer survivor, like one of the three, Barbara Ward.
“It is such a worthy cause! I decided I wanted to shave my hair off this year, and raise funds for CANSA, and have recruited ‘helpers’ – Barbara, and my daughter, Helen. Helen chickened out last time, but is ready now!” said Louisa. “I went to see my old school, Open Air, and heard of a lot of people I had known, who have died of cancer. I felt it was time to give back,” said Helen.
Barbara said: “I wanted to shave my hair at the Shavathon a few years ago, but no one wanted to do it with me, so I chickened out! It’s just hair, it’s not like we’re going to have an operation or anything!”
Louisa said people were saying how brave they thought the three were, but she said climbing Kilimanjaro was brave and that hair grew back!
“Cancer is so rife in the community, this is our way to do something in sympathy of cancer sufferers everywhere, in thanksgiving for those who have battled cancer and won, and in loving memory of all those who have lost the battle with cancer,” she said.
The women invited the community to either support them in their cause by sponsoring them through donations to CANSA or to take part in the Shavathon at Davenport Square on 28 February.
All contributions can be paid to the participants, who will issue receipts for money received, or alternatively paid into CANSA’s account: Cancer Association, Absa Bank, account number: 1286620040, with the reference: The Three Ladies.
