Marimba Festival marks Youth Day
Applications are open for this year's National Marimba Festival in Johannesburg.

LOCAL marimba bands are encouraged to enter this year's National Marimba Festival, to be held on 16 June.
The Marimba Education Foundation will mark the 40th Anniversary of the Soweto-uprising by staging the National Marimba Festival on Youth Day. “The festival caters for all ages, from primary to high school, from amateur to professional, from pure instrumentals to marimbas combined with vocals and dancing,” said Hilde Gordon of the Marimba Education Foundation.
She said past festivals have seen close to 1 000 enthusiastic players from more than 30 institutions from across the country taking part. “We are currently taking applications for the 2016 festival which promises to set a new benchmark,” said Hilde.
The National Marimba Festival provides an expressive platform for all exponents of this increasingly popular instrument. Although the festival takes the form of a competition, the greater outcome of the festival lies in the cross-pollination of ideas, styles and repertoire that inspires the players and educators to reach higher and higher levels of creative excellence in marimba playing.
The festival is open for applications and all relevant information and registration forms can be found on the website www.mef.org.za
Cost for participants is R70 and audience is R50
