Car theft thwarted by vigilant guard

A Morningside man is lucky to hold onto his car thanks to the vigilance of an ADT security officer.

A MORNINGSIDE man is breathing easy and counting his lucky starts this week, thankful that a private security officer helped prevent his car from being stolen.

ADT Security Officer, Skhumbuzo Hlabisa was on patrol along Currie Road last Monday, when he noticed two men standing next to a parked VW Polo. The men were acting in a suspicious manner, which caused Hlabisa to call for backup before he approached the men.

When the suspects noticed officer Hlabisa approaching, they climbed into a getaway vehicle, a white Golf 6 GTI and fled the scene. Further investigation revealed that the officer’s initial suspicions were correct, as the window of the VW Polo had been smashed, and the suspects had attempted to hotwire the Polo in order to steal it before they were interrupted.

The owner of the Polo arrived at his vehicle a short while later, and officer Hlabisa informed him of what had happened. The owner was shocked but extremely grateful for the officer’s intervention which prevented the theft of his vehicle.

Ivan Govender, District Manager of ADT Security KZN, praised officer Hlabisa for his vigilance and bravery and had this reminder for residents.

“Should you come across a suspect, remain calm and immediately contact your security service provider or the South African Police Service. Never confront them or attempt to capture the suspects because they may be armed and dangerous,” Govender advised.
