FOUR Durban Girls' College pupils, Maria Corte Portela, Kellyn Pincus, Shwetha Singh and Sandhya Ramcharrun left for Washington DC, USA on 1 April to participate in the Loudoun International Youth Summit.
Late last year, College was invited to participate in the summit as the only South African girl’s school representatives, along with four Clifton College representatives, to form the South African delegation. Each girl underwent a stimulating screening process which involved written assignments, training and a panel interview with teachers as well as the Head of High School, Mrs Marianne Bailey and the school's Headmaster, Mr Thomas Hagspihl.
They will be attending workshops and forum discussions with more than 20 other delegations from around the world, in which the youth will be challenged to come up with possible solutions to some world problems, as well as discussions around the problems faced in their own countries. They will also learn how to implement them in their regions.
The South African delegation looks to discuss poverty, unemployment, educational, environmental and racial issues within the country.
When asked for her opinion on the trip, Shwetha Singh said: “It is an absolute honour to be able to represent my country in such a wonderful event! I cannot wait to arrive at Washington.”
