Thirty-nine convictions for sex offenders

Police in KZN made 295 arrests of sexual offenders and 39 convictions in one month.

VARIOUS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KwaZulu-Natal have a reason to celebrate results achieved during their investigation of sexual-related offences in KwaZulu-Natal during March.

These dedicated teams of detectives have been shuttling to and from the different courts throughout the province to see justice done for several victims of rape and sexual violation.

From 1 to 31 March, members arrested 295 suspects for sexual-related offences including, rape, sexual assault, statutory rape, attempted rape, violation of a protection order, child abandonment, child pornography and other cases. A total of 39 accused were convicted and sentenced by various courts in the province. Two life sentences were handed down to two accused each, and others were given a total of 415 years imprisonment. Other suspects are still in custody waiting for their cases to be heard at various courts.

“This is the outcome of the commitment and hard work of dedicated investigation officers. The sentences meted out will serve as a deterrent to some potential rapists that the police, through its FCS units, are leaving no stone unturned,” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
