Objections to rezoning for Sheriffs office open
Residents are now able to make comments or objections regarding the use of a house in ZK Matthews Road for the Sheriff's office.
THE public participation period to object to the rezoning of a residential property in ZK Matthews (Nicolson) Road was opened on 8 April, and runs until 11 May.
Local residents have encouraged others living in the area to object to the rezoning, following disruptions in the road with the operating of the Sheriff's office from the property for the past six months.
In October, residents contacted ward councillor Nicole Graham to complain about the fact that a business was being operated from the house without the required approvals. Neighbours were unhappy about the approximately 50 cars which were parked on the road, pavements and middle islands at times, as they felt the area was not suitable for this, as well it being a traffic hazard.
At the time, Graham said a Section 79 notice had been issued to the property owner for illegal use. After meeting with the Sheriff he indicated he had applied for rezoning, and wished to work with the community.
According to Graham, the application is for part of the existing dwelling to be used as offices, and was essentially a home business application.
“I have recorded a formal objection about the potential rezoning of the property as I feel it is not appropriate. This is an important residential zone for the city and the residential rates base needs to be protected. People can't just buy a property and rezone it, as I don't believe this is consistent with the City's spacial development plan. I encourage people to lodge their comments correctly,”
She said all residents are able to make representation during the public participation period which will run until 11 May, and all comments will be considered during the decision-making process.
Residents are welcome to go to the Land Use Management offices between 8am and 12.30pm to view the plans and obtain further details on the application, upon making an appointment (contact 031 311 7605). Objections or comments can be emailed to Nadia.Ally@durban.gov.za or hand delivered to the department.
