Community Chest honours top donors
Top donors were thanked for their contribution to the needy at a Community Chest breakfast.
THE uBuntu Community Chest honoured its top donors at a breakfast at Coastlands Hotel recently.
Speaking at the event, director Gordon McDonald, said he was honoured by the attendance of so many donors. “We’ve had a challenging year, and it appeared we were not going to reach our target, but one of our donors gave us a top up donation which has helped, and the auditors are working at the offices at the moment,” he said.
Gordon thanked all the corporate and trust donors who have contributed to the Chest’s goal to help the community in need. “Without support from donors, we would be able to achieve very little,” he said.
Inbin Moodley, chairman of the Community Chest, expressed his appreciation and sincere gratitude for the support from those present and said with their support, last year the Chest was able to distribute resources to 84 registered welfare organisations.
“It is a very controlled process as organisations submit proposals and their financial documents to us to assess, and funds are then paid on a monthly basis to keep them afloat. R9.5 million was distributed last year to welfare organisations in urban and rural areas. This simply wouldn’t materialise without donor support. We have experienced a financial shortfall due to the economy, and with the demand for social services increasing, there has been limited resources. Thanks to our donors, we are the last beacon of hope to organisations which depend on the income,” he said.
Inbin said the Chest received R1.8 million support from the Midmar Mile and the Comrades Marathon, and that R200 000 was retained for the Impact Project, for the purchase of Jojo tanks in areas where the drought has had severe affect.
“We have implemented 20 tanks on sites where there are disabled and elderly people in need, and we have had donations from the Fulton Trust, the Victor Daitz Foundation and one of our donors. We will be sending out proposals to corporates to help us carry forward this project into the next year,” he said.
Representatives from corporates and trusts were given a framed certificate of appreciation. This year’s top trusts were Concord Trust, Fulton Trust and Victor Daitz Foundation, with top corporates being Game/Mass Discounters, the Spar Group and the Bidvest Group.
